KELLY, William Moor (Hon) (1827-1888)

Born —-, 1827 at Moncton, Westmorland Co., N.B.  Of Irish ancestry.  Son of M Kelly who emigrated to New Brunswick from Belfast, Ireland and settled at Moncton in 1798 with his wife.  Was one of the earliest settlers in Moncton, N.B.

Educated at the Moncton Public School.

Located at Chatham, Northumberland Co., N.B. and engaged in business.  Was a Director of the Chatham Branch Railway.  Was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Northumberland Co.

Married (1st); [date ?] to Miss Eliza Ann, daughter of James Long, Esq., Cocagne, N.B.  She died June 20th 1856, aged thirty-six years.

Married (2nd), August 12, 1860, to Miss Margaret, daughter of Alexander Fraser, Esq., Northumberland Co., N.B.

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B. as one of the members for Northumberland Co., at a Bye-election held August 10, 1867, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the sitting member, John Mercer Johnson (q.v.).  Elected by Acclamation.  Re-elected, by Acclamation, at the Bye-election held May 4th, 1869, made necessary by his acceptance of office.  Re-elected at the G.E.s of June 1870 and May 1874, and sat continuously as member until the dissolution of the legislature in 1878, when he retired from local politics.

On April 22, 1869, he was sworn in as a member of the Executive Councilof N.B. and received the appointment of Commissioner of Public Works in the administration of the Hon. A. R. Wetmore, (q.v.).  He continued to hold this appointment throughout the administrations of the Hon. G. E. King; the Hon. G.L. Hatheway; and again, the Hon. G.E. King, until June 1878 when the King Administration resigned following its defeat at the G.E. of that year.

On April [?] 1878, he was called to the Legislative Council og N.B. and continued a member of that body until 1882 when he resigned from the Council and moved to Montreal, P.Q.

He died December 12th, 1888, at Montreal, P.Q., aged sixty-one years.  Buried at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Chatham, N.B.  Survived by his widow and [—]

Mrs. Kelly died July 4th 1895, aged sixty-three years.
