Hughes, Charles Joseph Arthur (1909 – 2006)

Born, March 2nd, 1909, at Fredericton, N.B. of Irish-Canadian ancestry. Son of James A. Hughes, School Principal, and his wife Mary Eveleen McMahon.

Educated at St. Dunstan’s School, Fredericton, N.B.; at Fredericton High School; and at the Univ. of N.B., graduating with the degree of B.A. in 1930. Studied law and was admitted to the Bar of N.B. in 1933.

Located at St. Stephen, N.B., in 1934, and engaged in the practice of his profession until 1942.  Appointed Chairman of the War Labour Board for N.B., and held this post from 1943-1946. Was Chairman of the Labour Relations Board of N.B. from 1943-1953.  Solicitor for the City of Fredericton from 1953-1965.  Member of the Council of the N.B. Barrister’s Society from 1948-1065; and Pres. Of the Society from 1961-1962.

Practiced law in the city of Fredericton from 1946-1965.

Married, August 19th, 1937, to Miss Edith Barbara Atwater, daughter of Charles Atwater, Insurance Office Manager, Newport, Rhode Island, U.S.A. By this marriage there was a family of two sons and one daughter.

On May 17th, 1965, he was appointed a Judge of the County Court of N.B. for the District comprising the Counties of York, Sunbury and Queens. (indecipherable) Judge James Bacon Dickson (q.v.), retired.

On March 4th, 1968 he was sworn in a Justice of the Supreme Court of New Brunswick, Appels Division, which appointment he holds at the present time.
