HALE, Frederick Harding (1844 – 1912)

Born, December 8th, 1844 at Northampton, Carleton Co., N.B.  Of Irish and Loyalist ancestry.  Fourth son of Martin Hale, Esq., (b, 1798 – d. Jun 29, 1861), and his wife, Hulda Dickenson (b. 1810 – d. Oct. 19, 1883), daughter of Harding Dickinson, a Loyalist.

(Martin Hale emigrated from Ballyinn, County Waterford, Ireland, in 1815 and settled in Northampton, NB.)

Educated at the public school, Northampton, Carleton Co., N.B.

Located at Northampton, N.B. and engaged in farming and lumbering, becoming one of the largest lumber merchants in New Brunswick.

Married (1st), June 20, 1869 to Miss Rhoda L. McGee, daughter of Moses McGee, Esq.  By this marriage there was a family of one son.  She died June 14th, 1870.

Married (2nd), June 17, 1873, to Miss Emma E. Boyer, daughter of Moses Boyer, Esq., Victoria, Carleton County, N.B.  By this marriage there was a family of two sons and three daughters.  She died October 30th, 1889, aged thirty-six years, and was buried in the Grafton Cemetery, N.B.

Married (3rd), November 2nd, 1891, to Miss Angelina N. Faulkner, daughter of J. Faulkner, Esq., Kings County, NB.  By this marriage there was no family.

First elected to the House of Commons as member for the constituency of Carleton, at the G.E. of February 22nd, 1887, and sat that Parliament until its dissolution in 1891.  He did not offer for re-election at the G.E. of 1891, but was again elected to the House of Commons, as member for Carleton, at the G.E. of June 22nd, 1896.  Re-elected at the G.E. of November 7th, 1900, and sat as member until the dissolution of Parliament in 1904.  At the G.E. of November 3rd, 1904, he was defeated, and subsequently retired from local politics.

He subsequently moved to Vancouver, B.C., where he acquired large lumber interests in the Fernie District of South-Eastern British Columbia.

He died, June 16th, 1912, at Vancouver, B.C., aged sixty-eight years. Survived by his widow, three sons and two daughters.  Buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Vancouver, B.C.

(2nd) 1. Dau.:     Mabel Aurilla – (b. July 17, 1875 – d. Feb. 5th, 1964).  Mar. May 12, 1897, Edward Herbert Saunders, M.D.C.M. (McGill, 1895), Montana, and Vancouver, B.C.  (b. 1870 – d. Nov 26th, 1951) Family of one son and one daughter.

  1. Dau: Emma – (b. March 24, 1899 – d. Nov. 28, 1960).  Aug. 16, 1930, John Murchie MacAdam, Vancouver, BC.  One daughter.
  2. Son: Frederick Edward, M.D.C.M. (McGill, 1935), Vancouver, (b. Mar. 20, 1907 – [date])  Jun 13, 1936, Janet Virginia Davis.  Family of one son, one daughter.
  3. : Baby Hale – b. Sep. 12, 1881 – d. in infancy
  4. Son: Arthur Eugene – (b. May 2, 1880 – [date])  Refrigeration business, Honolulu and California.  Apr. 22, 1903, Pearl Campbell
  5. : Evelyn Emma – (b. Mar 30, 1885 – Jul 24, 1956).  Mar. June 1, 1910, Charles Allen Hancock (d. Feb 11, 1925).  Lumberman, Vancouver, B.C.  Family of one son, one daughter.

[HALE FAMILY NOTES:

There were ten boys and one girl in the Hale family, all born in Ireland.  William; James; Michael; John; Denis; Martin; and Mary, plus four other boys.

The boys all came to North America, some settling in Canada, others in the U.S.a. – one in Boston, another in New York; Denis and Michael to Caribou, Maine. 

Martin Hale settled at Grafton, N.B. and married Hulda Dickinson.
