GUTHRIE, Percy Albert (1884 – 1948)
Born, June 20th, 1884, at Oromocto, Sunbury Co., NB. Of Irish-English ancestry. Son of James Guthrie, Northern Ireland, and his wife, Louise Brown, English.
Educated himself in the lumber woods and on drives. Studied Law and was admitted to the Bar of N.B., as Attorney, Nov. 7th, 1908, and as Barrister, Nov 18, 1909.
Located at Fredericton, N.B. and engaged in the practice of his profession. Took an active interest in Military Affairs, and served in the South African War as a private. On the outbreak of World War I, he founded and organized the 236 McLean Highlanders, of which he was Colonel. He took this Batt. Overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.
Married May 5th, 1910, to Miss Margaret E., daughter of Robert McMurtrie, Esq., Fredericton, N.B. By this marriage there was a family of two sons and one daughter.
First elected to the House of Assembly as one of the members for York Co., at a bye-election held Feb. 19, 1914, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the sitting member, Hon. H. F. McLeod (q.v.). He sat one session and was then called overseas with his Battalion and did not take his seat again in the House.
On his return from overseas, he practiced law a short time in Fredericton and then moved to Boston, Mass. Where he successfully carried on his practice and engaged also in financial interests. During Worl War II he again enlisted in the Canadian army.
He died, April 23, 1948, in Boston, Mass, aged sixty-three years. Survived by his widow, one son, and one daughter. Buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fredericton, NB. Mrs. Guthrie resides at Hanover, Mass., Box 354 [ed. Reminder: these documents were prepared in the 1960s]
