GIBSON, Alexander (Jr.) (1852-1920)

Born December 15th, 1852 at Lepreau, Charlotte Co., N.B.  Of Irish ancestry.  Son of Alexander Gibson (Sr.) (b. Aug 1st, 1819 – d. Aug 16th, 1913), and his wife, Mary Robinson (d. Feb. 6th, 1898).

(Grandparents were natives of Belfast, Ireland, who emigrated to New Brunswick, and settled at Lepreau, Charlotte Co.  Alexander Gibson Sr. was a very successful lumber operator and industrialist.  He founded the Town of Marysville, and constructed the Marysville Cotton Mills.)

Educated at the Fredericton Public Schools, and at Mount Allison University, Sackville, N.B.

Located at Marysville, York Co., N.B. and engaged in the lumber, milling and manufacturing business associated with his father.  Served on the Marysville Town council and was Mayor of Marysville for several years.

Married: (1st), [date], to Miss Minnie Topley, daughter of John Topley, Esq., Saint John, N.B.  By this marriage there was a family of one son.  She [Minnie] died.

Married: (2nd), [date], to Miss Charlotte Reid, daughter of R.A. Reid, Esq., Grand River, N.B.  By this marriage there was a family of one son and one daughter.

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B., as one of the members for York County, at the G.E. of February 18th, 1899.  Sat as member for two sessions of the Legislature, resigning in 1900 in order to contest the constituency of York for the House of Commons.

First elected to the House of Commons, as member for the constituency of York, at the G.E. of November 7th, 1900.  His election was protested and he resigned his seat.  He was again elected at the bye-election held December 28th, 1901, and sat as member until the dissolution of Parliament in 1904.  At the G.E. of November 3rd, 1904, he was defeated, and subsequently retired from active politics.

He died, April 9th, 1920, at Marysville, N.B., aged sixty-seven years.  Survived by his widow, one son, and one daughter.  Buried in the Methodist Cemetery, Marysville, N.B.
