FLEMMING, Hugh John (HON) (1899 – 1987)

Born January 5, 1899, at Peel, Carleton County, N.B.  Of Scottish-Irish ancestry.  Son of the Hon. James Kidd Flemming (q.v.) (1868 – 1927), Premier of N.B., and his wife, Helena Sarah Flemming (1865 – 1949).

Educated at the Woodstock High School.

Located at Juniper, N.B. and engaged in the lumber business.  Sec. Treas. And Manager, Flemming & Gibson Ltd.; Pres. Bristol Woodworking Co. Ltd., Pres. Woodstock Woodworking Factory Ltd.; Director, Maritime Trust Co. Ltd.; Dir. J. W. Boyer, Co. Ltd.; Dir. S.W. Bell Ltd.; Dir. Maritime Lumber Bureau and Can. Lumberman’s Assoc.  Municipal Councillor, Carelton County, N.B. 1921 – 1923.  Member K. of P. and A.F. & A. M.

Married, June 25th, 1924, to Miss Ada Boyer McAnn, daughter of C.W. McAnn, Esq., Kaslo, B.C.  Family of two sons.

Unsuccessfully contested Carleton-Victoria for the House of Commons at the G.E. of October 14, 1935.

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B. as one of the members for Carleton Co., at the G.E. of August 28th, 1944.  Re-elected at the G.E.s of 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1960, and sat as member until his resignation in 1960 to contest Royal for the House of Commons.

On October 8, 1952, he was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council of N.B. and became Premier, following the resignation of the Adm. of the Hon. J.B. McNair (q.v.).  He remained Premier until July 12th, 1960, when his Adm. resigned following its defeat at the G.E. of June 27, 1960.

First elected to the House of Commons, as member for Royal, at a bye-election held October 31, 1960, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of the sitting member, Hon. A.J. Brooks (q.v.).

Re-elected at the G.E.s of June 18, 1962, April 8, 1963, and November 8, 1965 as member for Carleton-Victoria and, at present, sits as member in the House of Commons. [Ed. Note:  to be remembered – these bios were done in the mid to late 1960s]

On October 11, 1960, he was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of Canada, and received the appointment of Minister of Forestry in the Adm. of the Right Hon. John D. Diefenbaker.  He held this appointment until Aug. 9th, 1962, when he became Min. of National Revenue in the Administration.  He held this latter apt. until April 22nd, 1963, when the Diefenbaker Adm. resigned following its defeat at the G.E. of April 8th, 1963.

[Ed. Note: Flemming retired from active politics in 1972.  He died, 16 October 1987 in Fredericton, N.B.  He and his wife, Aida, are buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery, Woodstock, N.B.]
