DOUGAN, Benjamin Hayes (M.D.) (1868 – 1940)

Born December 5th, 1868 at Hampstead, Queens Co., N.B.  Of Irish ancestry.  Son of John Hunter Dougan and Rachel Worden, both of Irish ancestry.

Educated at the public school, and at the Provincial Normal School, F’ton, N.B.  Taught school for seven years.  Entered McGill Univ. to study medicine and graduated with the Degree of M.D.C.M. in 1905.

Located at Harvey, Yourk County, N.B. and successfully engaged in the practice of his profession.  Served on the York Co. Municipal Council as Councillor, 1915 – 1922, and was Warden of the County 1921 – 1922.  Was Coroner of the County for many years.  A member of the A.F. & A.M.

Married, December 18th, 1906, to Miss Blanche M., daughter of George C. Slipp, Esq., Upper Gagetown, N.B.  Family of two sons.

First elected to the House of Assembly, as one of the members for York Co., at the G.E. of August 10th, 1925, and sat that Legislature.  Re-elected at the G.E. of June 19th, 1930, and sat as member until dissolution of the Legislature in 1935.  At the G.E. of June 27th, 1935, he was defeated, and subsequently retired from active politics.

In September 1939 he suffered serious injuries in an automobile accident, from which he did not recover, and he died January 1st, 1940, in hospital, Fredericton, N.B., aged seventy-one years.  Survived by his widow and two sons.  Buried in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery.  Mrs. Dougan died February 19th, 1959.
