DOONE, James Joseph Hayes (Hon)  (1888-1953)

Born, August 8th, 1888, at Doone’s Head, Charlotte County, N.B.B.  Of Irish ancestry.  Son of John Doone and his wife, Margaret Hayes.

Educated at the Devon School; at Fredericton High School; at St. Joseph’s College, Memramcook, N.B.; and at the Univ. of New Brunswick.  Studied law and was admitted to the Bar of N.B. as an Attorney, November 12, 1912, and as a Barrister, November 13, 1913.

Located at Fredericton, N.B. and engaged in the practice of his profession.  Served overseas in the First Great War with the 104th Battalion, C.E.F.

Following the war he established a law practice at Black’s Harbour, Charlotte County, N.B.  Also became Export Manager of Connors Bros. Ltd., Fish Packers and Exporters.  Was Pres. Of the Maritime S.S. Co.  Was an active member of the Canadian Legion; and the Stella Maris Holy Name Society.

Married, March 7th, 1920, to Miss Muriel Maude Logan, daughter of George E. Logan, Esq., Devon, N.B.  by this marriage there was a family of two sons and seven daughters.

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B., as one of the members for Charlotte County, at the G.E. of June 27th, 1935.  Re-elected at the G.E.s of November 20th, 1939, August 28th, 1944, and June 28th, 1948, and sat as member until June 25th, 1949, when he was appointed to the Senate of Canada.

On January 10th, 1940, he was sworn in a member of the Executive Council of N.B. and received the appointment of Prov. Secretary Treasurer in the Adm. of the Hon. Allison A. Dysart (q.v.).  Upon Mr. Dysart’s retirement on March 30th, the Administration was re-organized, and he continued to hold the same position in the Adm. of the Hon. John B. McNair (q.v.).  He remained Prov. Secretary until his resignation from the House of Assembly.

On June 25th, 1949, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada, and sat as a member in that House until his death.

He died, April 6th, 1953, at his residence, Black’s Harbour, N.B., aged sixty-four years.  Survived by two sons and seven daughters.  Buried in the Stella Maris Cemetery, Black’s Harbour, N.B.

His wife pre-deceased him, dying March 9th, 1940, aged forty years.
