COLTER, Newton Ramsay (M.D)

Born, July 30th, 1844, at Sheffield, Sunbury County, N.B.  of Irish ancestry.  Son of Alexander Colter, and his wife.*

Educated at the Sheffield public school.  Studied medicine at Harvard, London, and Edinburgh Universities, graduating with the Degree of M.D.

Located at Woodstock, N.B. and engaged in the practice of his profession.

Married, Nov. 1871, to Miss Eliza Jane Hatt, daughter of George Hatt, Esq., Merchant, Fredericton, N.B.  By this marriage there was a family of four daughters.

First elected to the House of Commons, as member for the constituency of Carleton, at the G.E. of March 5th, 1981, defeating his Conservative opponent, Col. D.M. Vince.  The election was protested, and at a new election held, April 6th, 1892, following Dr. Colter’s resignation, he was elected with a larger majority over Col. Vince.  He sat as member until the dissolution of Parliament in 1896.  At the G.E. of June 22nd, 1896, he was defeated, and subsequently retired from active politics.

In July, 1897, he was appointed Post Office Inspector for New Brunswick, vice S.J. King, Esq., deceased.  He held this position for nearly twenty years, retiring on superannuation, March 31, 1917.

He died, April 6th, 1917, at Fredericton, N.B., aged seventy-two years.  Buried in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery.  Survived by his widow and four daughters.

Note:  Hon. Charles Wesley Colter – B. Feb. 23, 1846, D. July 25, 1929, in York County.  Son of Samuel Colter.  Moved to Ontario and settled in Haldimand County.  M.P. for Haldimand in 1886.  County Court Judge, 1903.  (Probably a cousin)
