Born, September 24th, 1917, at Chipman, queens County, N.B. Of Irish-Canadian ancestry. Son of Amos Bishop, Lumberman, and his wife, Annie Elzina Dykeman.

Educated at the Chipman Public Schools.

Located at Chipman, N.B. and engaged in the lumber business. President of the Bishop Lumber Co. Ltd. & Bishop Sawmills, Ltd.

Married, September 15th, 1938, to Miss Margaret Mae Wilson, daughter of Hugh Wilson, Esq., Farmer, Chipman, N.B. by this marriage there is a family of one son and one daughter.

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B., as one of the members for Queens County, at the G.E. of September 22nd, 1952. Re-elected at the G.E.’s of June 18th 1956, June 27th, 1960, April 22nd, 1963, and October 3rd, 1967, and at present sits as member in the House.

[Obituary – Wilfrd George BISHOP

BISHOP, WILFRED GEORGE At the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, on March 1st, 2004 Wilfred George Bishop, born in Chipman in 1917, the son of the late Amos and Elzina (Annie) Bishop. Predeceased by his wife Margaret Mae Bishop in 2002, brother Calvin Bishop and sisters Vera Babington, Cora Galbraith, Blanche Horncastle, and Madeline Chase. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Bishop of Halifax and his son Darrell (Betty) Bishop of Fredericton; and by grandchildren Darren, Brian, Liam and Meagan. Wilfred was the longest sitting member in the Legislature of the Province of New Brunswick, serving thirty five years as a member for Queens County and Queens North. He was first elected in 1952. He was appointed Minister of Natural Resources in 1970. In 1972 he became Minister of Highways (later Transportation) where he served for thirteen years. In October, 1985 he was appointed President of the Executive Council, where he served until his retirement in the Fall of 1987. Prior and during his service to New Brunswick, Wilfred was also active in private business. In the early 1940’s he began a lumber and sawmill business with his father and later his brother (Bishop Brothers). He was President of Bishop Lumber Co., B & F Lumber Company, and Bishop Sawmills Ltd. Wilfred’s greatest love was people. He touched the lives of many as a loving father, grandfather, mentor, and friend. ]
