Henneberry, Edward Jerome (Hon) (1890-1953)
Born, 1893, at St. John, N.B., of Irish-Canadian ancestry. Son of Patrick Henneberry. Esq., and his wife, Margaret Duffy, both of Irish parentage and natives of N.B.
Educated at the St. John Public School; St. Joseph’s Univ. Memramcook, N.B. (Grad. 1913) and Kings College Law School, graduating B.C.L. in 1916. Was admitted to the bar of N.B. as Attorney, Nov 11, 1916, and as Barrister, Nov 29th, 1917.
Located at St. John, N.B. and engaged in the practice of his profession. Created K.C. in 1947. Took an active interest in social and fraternal affairs. Member of K. of C.
In 1939, St. Joseph’s Univ., Memramcook, N.B., conferred upon him the Honorary degree of D.C.L.
Married to Miss Dorothy, daughter of Augusts Kinsella, Esq., of St. John, N.B. No family.
Unsuccessfully contested St. John City for the House of Assembly at the G.E.’s of Aug 10th, 1925, and June 19th, 1930, in the interests of the Liberal Party.
First elected to the House of Assembly, as one of the members for St. John City, at the G.E. of June 27th 1935, and sat that legislature until its dissolution in 1939. At the G.E. of Nov 20th, 1939, he was defeated and subsequently retired from active politics.
On June 15th. 1938 he was sworn in a member of the Executive Council of N.B., and received the appointment of Pre. Of the Executive Council and Minister Without Portfolio in Adm. Of the Hon. A.A. Dysart (q.v.), which position he held until Jan 10th, 1940, when he resigned following his personal defeat at the G.E. of 1939.
In June, 1947, he was appointed Police Magistrate for the City of St, John, which position he held until his death.
He died, Sept 9th, 1953, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. John, N.B., aged sixty-three years. Survived by his widow. Buried in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic cemetery, St. John. N.B.
Mrs. Henneberry died April 6th, 1963.
