GILL, Richard Joseph (Hon.) 1886 – 1959
Born March 29th, 1886 at Barnaby River, North. Co., NB. of Irish-Canadian ancestry. Son of Thomas Gill (B.1850-D.Sept 12, 1936), and his wife, Sarah Masterson
Educated at the Barnaby River Public School; and at St. Francis Xavier Univ, Antigonish, N.S.
Located at Barnaby River, N.B. and engaged in the lumbering, manufacturing and shipping business established by his father. Was partner in the first of J.E. & D.P. Connolly, Contractors. President of the Bathurst North Mink Fur Farms Ltd. Was Pres. Of the Dominion Council of Canadian Fur Breeders.
North. County Councillor for many years, and was Warden of the County, 1922-1924. Past Pres. Of the North Co. Liberal Assoc. Member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Married, Sept 8th, 1920, to Miss Estella C., daughter of Patrick Power, Esq., Nelson Parish, N.B. No family.
First elected to the House of Assembly, as one of the members for North. Co. at the G.E. of June 19trh, 1930. Re-elected at the G.E.`s of 1935, 1939, 1944, 1948, 1952 and 1956, and sat continuously for twenty-nine years until his death.
In May, 1946, he was sworn in a member of the Executive Council of N.B., and received the appointment of Min. of Lands & Mines in the Adm. of the Hon. J. B . McNair (q.v.), which position he held until Oct. 8th, 1952, when the McNair Adm. resigned following its defeat at the G.E. of that year.
He died, March 7th, 1959, at Barnaby River, North. Co., N.B., aged seventy-two years. Survived by his widow. Buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Barnaby River, N.B.
