EMERSON, Clarence Vernon (HON) (1901 – 1963)

Born, Jan 24^th, 1901, at St. John, N.B.  Son of William Edward Emerson (Irish), and his wife, Augusta J. Eddleston (English).

Educated at the St. John Grammar Schools; Kerr’s Business College; and the Modern Business College, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Located at St. John, N.B., and was associated with the C.P.R. from 1918 to 1926.  Entered the mercantile business.  Became Vice President and Managing Director of Emerson Bros. Ltd.; Vice-Pres. Of W.E. Emerson & Sons Ltd., retail hardware merchants and plumbers.  Pres. Of Consolidated Realties Ltd.  Was a Director of Canada Cement Ltd.; Keyment Mines Ltd.; and St. Croix Paper Co.  Was Pres. Of the St. John City hospital Board of Commissioners from 1952 until is death.  Member of the St. Patrick’s society; Union Club; Royal Order of Scotland; K. of P.; 32^nd Degree Mason.  Prominent Layman in the Anglican Church.

In May, 1955, he received an Honorary Degree of doctor of Civil Laws from the University of Kings College, Halifax, N.S.

Married, June 2^nd, 1936, to Miss Frances Eileen, daughter of Ernest A. P. Job, Esq., Torquay, Devon, England.  No family.

On Oct. 12^th, 1957, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada.  He sat as member in that chamber until his death.  Was Chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Financing.

He died, Sep. 24^th, 1963, in the St. John General Hospital, aged sixty-two years.  Survived by his widow, one brother and two sisters.  Buried in Fernhill Cemetery.
