DEVER, James (Hon) (1825 – 1904)

Born, May 2^nd, 1825, at Ballyshannon, Ireland.  Of Irish ancestry.  Son of James Dever (d. 1851), and his wife, Catherine Gallagher, daughter of Daniel Gallagher.

(Grandfather, Paul Dever, was the only son of Paul Eugene Dever, a retired Army Officer who was drowned in the River Erne.)

Educated at the public school.

Emigrated to New Brunswick with his family, who settled in Saint John, and established a bakery business on Dock Street.

Later, he and his brother, John, established themselves in the wholesale grocery and liquor business under the firm name of Dever Bros.  His brother John, later withdrew from the partnership, an established his own business.

The business of James Dever was destroyed by fire in 1877, and he retired into private life.

Married, November 25^th, 1853, to Miss Margaret Morris, a daughter of Daniel Morris, Esq., Lancaster, N.B.  By this marriage there was a family of two sons and seven daughters.

On March 14^th, 1868, he was called to the Senate of Canada, and continued a member of that body until his decease.

He died, May 7^th, 1904, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Ottawa, Ont., aged seventy-nine years.  Buried in Old St. Peter’s Cemetery, Saint John, N.B. Survived by his widow, two sons and seven daughters.
