CULLIGAN, Arthur Patrick (Hon) (1879 – 1929)
Born, July 29th 1879, at Belledune, Gloucester County, N.B. Of Irish and French Canadian ancestry. Son of John Culligan, Irish, and his wife, Plasha Hachey, French Canadian.
Educated at the Quinn’s Point Public School.
Located at Jacquet River, Restigouche County, N.B. and engaged in the lumbering, milling, and lumber export business on an extensive scale.
Married, September 1st, 1902, to Miss Catherine Daley, daughter of John Daley, Esq., Belledune, Restigouche Co., N.B. By this marriage there was a family of three sons and five daughters.
Unsuccessfully contested Restigouche County for the House of Assembly of N.B., at the G.E. of March 3rd, 1908.
First elected to the House of Assembly as one of the members for Rest. County, at the G.E. of June 1912, and sat as a member in the legislature until its dissolution in 1917. At the G.E. of February 24th, 1917, he was defeated, and he remained out of active politics for a few years.
On February 1st, 1917, he was sworn in as member of the Executive Council of N.B., and received the appointment of Minister Without Portfolio in the administration of the Hon. James Alex. Murray (q.v.), which position he held until March 29th, 1917, when the Murray administration resigned following its defeat at the G.E. of that year.
First elected to the House of Commons, as member for the Constituency of Restigouche-Madawaska, at the G.E. of October 29th, 1925, and sat as member until the dissolution of Parliament in 1926. At the G.E. of September 14th, 1926, he was defeated, and subsequently retired from active politics.
He died, March 9th, 1929, in the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Campbellton, N.B., aged forty-eight years. Buried in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Belledune, N.B. Survived by his widow, three sons, and five daughters.
