COLTER, Thomas Henry (1849-1923)

Born,           , 1849, at Sheffield, Sunbury County, N.B.  Of Irish ancestry.  Son of Alexander Colter, Esq., a native of Ireland, and his wife.*

Educated at the Sheffield public school, and the Fredericton Grammar School.

Located at Douglas, York Co., N.B. and engaged in general country business.  Sat on the York County Municipal Council for nine years as a Councillor for his Parish and was Warden of the County for two years.  Was a Deputy Grand Master of the L.O.L. of N.B.

Married [date]         , to Miss Margaret M. Cliff.

First elected to the House of Assembly, as one of the members for York Co., at a Bye-Election held October 3rd, 1890, made necessary by the resignation of the sitting members whose return had been protested.  Mr. Colter replaced Richard Bellamy (q.v.) on the ticket.  He sat that Legislature until its dissolution in 1892.  At the G.E. of October 22nd, 1892, he was defeated, and subsequently retired from active politics.

In December1901 he was Registrar of Deeds and Wills for York County, vice Abram D. Yerxa deceased December 14, 1901.  He held this position until his decease.

He died, December 26th, 1923, at his residence, Douglas, York County, N.B., aged seventy-four years.  Buried in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery.

Mrs. Colter died in 1933, aged seventy-nine years.  Buried in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery.
