COLTER, George Johnson (Hon.)

York Co.

Born,          1840, at Douglas, York County, N.B.  Of Irish ancestry.  Son of Alexander Colter, Esq., a native of Ireland, and his wife.

Educated at the Public School.

Located at St. Mary’s, N.B., and engaged in business.  Sat on the York Co. Municipal Council for many years as Councillor for his Parish, and was Warden in the County.

Family of

First elected to the House of Assembly of N.B., as one of the members for York County at the G.I. of June, 1878, and sat that Legislature.   Re-elected at the G.E. of June 1882 and sat as member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1886.  At the G.E.’s of April 1886, and October 3rd, 1890, he was defeated and subsequently retired from active political life.

On May 25th, 1882, he was sworn in a member of the Executive Council of N.B. and received the appointment of Commissioner of Public Works in the Adm. Of the Hon. Daniel L. Hannington (q.v.).  He held this appointment until February 26th, 1883, when the Hannington Adm. Resigned following a vote of non-confidence in the House of Assembly, February 26th, 1883.

He died, November 18th, 1915, at St. Mary’s, York County, N.B., after a long illness, aged seventy-five years.  Survived by one son.  Buried in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery.  Mrs. Colter died,        .
